Your OCIA Journey
Order of Christian Initiation of Adults
Discover your path to becoming Catholic
What is OCIA?
OCIA (formerly known as RCIA) is the process through which adults become Catholic or complete their Catholic initiation. Your journey depends on your current situation and background.
Find Your Path
You are an INQUIRER
Welcome to your journey of exploration! As an inquirer, you're at the beginning stage, asking questions and learning about the Catholic faith. There's no pressure or commitment yet - this is your time to explore and discover.
Your Next Steps:
- Attend inquiry sessions to learn about Catholic beliefs
- Ask questions freely - no question is too small
- Meet with parish staff or volunteers
- When ready, you may choose to become a catechumen or candidate
You are a CATECHUMEN
As someone who has never been baptized, you'll journey through the full initiation process. You'll receive comprehensive instruction in the Catholic faith and participate in special liturgical rites as you prepare for baptism, confirmation, and first Eucharist.
Your Journey Includes:
- Period of formation and catechesis
- Rite of Election (usually during Lent)
- Scrutinies and other liturgical rites
- Reception of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at Easter Vigil
You are a CANDIDATE
As a baptized Christian from another tradition, you're seeking full communion with the Catholic Church. Your valid baptism is recognized, so your journey focuses on learning Catholic teachings and traditions.
Your Journey Includes:
- Formation in Catholic doctrine and practice
- Call to Continuing Conversion
- Reception into full communion (usually at Easter Vigil)
- Confirmation and first Eucharist (if not already received)
You need COMPLETION OF INITIATION
As a baptized Catholic who hasn't received Confirmation and/or first Eucharist, you'll complete your Catholic initiation. This adapted process helps you prepare for the sacraments you haven't yet received.
Your Journey Includes:
- Catechesis appropriate to your needs
- Preparation for Confirmation and/or Eucharist
- Reception of remaining sacraments
- Integration into parish life
The OCIA Journey
Regardless of your starting point, the OCIA process includes these key elements:
□ Period of Inquiry
A time of questions, exploration, and initial formation. No commitments required - just come as you are and learn.
□ Period of Formation
Deeper study of Catholic teaching, participation in parish life, and spiritual formation with sponsors and catechists.
□ Period of Preparation
Intensive preparation during Lent, including special liturgical rites and final preparations for initiation.
✨ Initiation & Beyond
Reception of sacraments (typically at Easter Vigil) and ongoing formation as a new Catholic Christian.
